Doors are part of everyday life, but for young children, they can be surprisingly dangerous.
In the United States, research based on national injury data found that over 1.3 million children were treated in emergency rooms for door-related injuries over a 10-year period — that’s roughly one child every four minutes.
Many of these injuries happen when small fingers get pinched as a door closes (Source).
Young kids are especially at risk. In that same research, more than 40% of injured children were four years old or younger, and the most common cause was fingers being caught in a door.
Similar patterns appear around the world. In a hospital study of children treated for finger injuries caused by doors and windows, nearly 40% of the injured children were under four years old, and some of those injuries were more than just small scrapes (Source).
Not every door injury involves a sliding door, but these numbers show how easily everyday doors can injure little fingers.
That’s why Pinky Hero exists: to add one simple layer of protection in a world full of moving doors, busy homes, and curious little hands.
